Abstract This article will reveal how local scientific determination and ambition, in the face of rejection by funders, navigated a path to success influence national policy international medicine. It demonstrate that Birmingham, England's ‘second city’, was key centre for cutting-edge biological psychiatry Britain 1920s 1930s. The ambitions Frederick Mott – doyen biochemistry, neuropathology neuropsychiatry, until now celebrated as London figure revolutionize psychiatric treatment through science, chimed with those City University Birmingham's Joint Board Research Mental Diseases.
